In addition to our core sector-based training programs, BWI develops and delivers customized training opportunities that meet real workforce needs in partnership with local employers and other community-based organizations. We provide training in the skills people need to launch sustainable careers in emerging industries, along with ongoing support to help graduates advance their careers. Current Training Opportunities

Maritime Deckhand Training

This free 4-week program prepares New Yorkers for entry-level maritime careers as Deckhands and crew members on ferries, tugboats, and other working vessels. Participants will gain foundational skills, industry-recognized credentials, and access to local employers hiring for good jobs on the water. 

Training Includes:

• Knots & rope-tying
• Vessel parts & systems
• Maps & navigation
• Customer service & teamwork
• Support obtaining Transportation Worker Identification Cards (TWIC)

Housing Career Pathways

This free 4-week program (followed by a 2-week paid internship) prepares individuals for entry-level roles in NYC’s affordable housing sector. The program emphasizes professional communication and digital skills in addition to industry-specific topics. Classroom training is fully in-person and takes place from 9am – 5pm M-F at one of our training facilities in Brooklyn. Internship locations are affordable housing property management companies across NYC. 

Graduates go on to roles like Compliance Coordinator or Rental Coordinator—and receive dedicated career support beyond training.

What Comes After Training

Graduates of any Customized Training program will work with staff to connect to job opportunities that are relevant to their training. Once graduates start working, staff remain available to provide continued career coaching or additional wraparound services for another two years.
