“Before the program, I wasn’t experienced in the working world. I am now a production assistant consistently working, learning every day, climbing the career ladder and improving my life, financially and spiritually. BWI gave me that chance and I am forever thankful.”

-Wei Yang, ‘Made in NY’ PA Training Program Graduate
“MADE IN NY” PRODUCTION ASSISTANT TRAINING PROGRAM

The “Made in NY” PA Training Program is a job training program that prepares low-income and unemployed New York City residents to work as entry-level Production Assistants (PAs) on major film and TV productions. Brooklyn Workforce Innovations offers this free program in partnership with the New York City Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment.

HOW TO APPLY

Visit our Apply page to learn about the eligibility requirements and how to submit an application.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING THE TRAINING
During our training, participants will learn what they need to know to succeed in their first jobs behind the scenes.  During the program, you can expect:
  • Lessons on set etiquette, how to complete production paperwork, how to use walkies, and more
  • Real-world experience managing crowds and the public
  • Participation in mock interviews with real industry professionals, including producers and production coordinators
  • Visits to production studios and equipment houses
  • Opportunities to network with industry professionals
  • Support developing your production resume and business cards
  • Career mapping
ADDITIONAL PROGRAM DETAILS:
  • The program is 4 weeks long and runs full-time from Monday through Friday.
  • The program is free for all participants.
  • Participants are not paid during training, and we do not offer stipends; however, we can help participants sign up for SNAP and other public assistance programs. We provide MetroCard support for people who cannot afford to commute.
  • We host training cycles four times a year: January, March, May, and September.
  • Lessons are hybrid, which means we train participants in person and virtually.  In-person lessons take place at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Participants must be willing to commute to the Brooklyn Navy Yard for in-person training and must have a private space to participate in virtual training sessions.
WHO WE TRAIN

We serve unemployed or low-income New Yorkers. Unemployed, underemployed, and individuals with barriers to employment, such as those who are formerly incarcerated, veterans, NYCHA residents, refugees, and new immigrants are strongly encouraged to apply.

No previous production experience is required.

WHAT COMES AFTER TRAINING

Participants who complete the program receive 2 years of job placement assistance on location for film, television, commercial, and music video productions. We also provide career counseling.

IMPACT STUDY

In 2023, this report was released by Bloomberg Philanthropies and Brooklyn Workforce Innovations and authored by Buro Happold. It illustrates that investing in early career development in the production industry creates conditions for well-paying jobs and increases opportunities for underrepresented communities to be a part of this iconic industry.
