Brooklyn Woods builds premium-quality, low environmental impact cabinets and wood products that are hand-made by training program graduates launching new careers in woodworking.
Brooklyn Woods designs and builds low-environmental-impact cabinetry, architectural millwork, and custom fabrication through a high-impact social enterprise. Graduates of our skills training launch new careers while fabricating high-volume bathroom vanities, kitchen cabinets, furniture, and now, housewares, through a new partnership with West Elm.
Every Brooklyn Woods product has been hand-crafted by a person on a journey to build a new career. Each year, Brooklyn Woods prepares 60 low-income, unemployed men and women for careers in woodworking and fabrication through a hands-on, eight week training program. Graduates of the program continue learning their trade while gaining paid work experience at the social enterprise. Brooklyn Woods is one of seven skills training and job placement programs at Brooklyn Workforce Innovations.
Brooklyn Woods manufactures bathroom vanities for large scale housing developments throughout New York City. These include both ADA compliant adaptable vanities for affordable housing projects (50 to 300+ units) as well as high end vanities for market-rate condominiums. Both are manufactured to exacting specifications with the same attention to quality, sustainable materials, and low VOC finishes.
The CNC manufacturing capabilities that enable Brooklyn woods to take on large scale vanity projects also lend themselves to smaller scale semi-custom kitchen projects. Both activities provide training opportunities for graduates to learn advanced digital manufacturing techniques in a production setting, and prepares them for jobs as level-one CNC operators.
Working with architects and designers, the team at Brooklyn Woods has fabricated custom millwork for lobbies, trade shows, commercial workspaces and private residences.
Utilizing reclaimed woods and shop scrap, Brooklyn woods manufactures cutting boards and other housewares and gift items that are available through the West Elm website. These products reinforce many of the basic woodworking skills learned during training and provide hours of skill building opportunities for graduates hired into the social enterprise.
The fact that I can build a career and build something that’s going to be useful for the environment is very exciting,” said Cintron. “Brooklyn Woods gave me a second chance to get on my feet and do what I want to do, and do what I love
- Angelo Cintron
