New York Drives

A NYS Driver’s License is a prerequisite for three BWI skills training programs and a variety of better-paying career-ladder entry-level jobs. BWI is pleased to offer motivated New Yorkers the chance for free training leading to the Class D (regular) NYS Driver’s License. New York Drives combines driving lessons and professional development workshops to help you qualify for one of BWI’s three job training programs that require or strongly encourage having a driver’s license: Made in New York, Brooklyn Networks and Brooklyn Woods. Once a year, New York Drives offers security guard training.

New York Drives is about six weeks long. The first three weeks include part-time professional development skills training followed by three to four weeks of part-time driving lessons. After participants successfully pass the road test, graduates can apply to one of BWI’s sector-based training programs leading to skilled employment. For the security guard training, graduates also obtain their security guard certificates and license. All programs include two years of job placement assistance. Trainees receive ongoing social supports through Single Stop.
